Q: My husband and I are looking to open a street racing track in Indiana. We aren't entirely sure where to begin in planning, funding and getting it all approved though. We want to do it because there are lots of street racers around, but it is, of course, illegal to street race. So we want to provide a place where people can come together to race, get an official time for their run and even win a purse at the end of the day if they have the fastest run time of the day. The question is who do we need to talk to? Chamber of Commerce, SBA, and who else? I know we need to get permits and get the proper zoning etc. But what are the proper steps to get it done? Someone please help. We are very serious about this.
A: Beyond insurance also needing to get barriers set in place entirely around the track to keep the cars from leaving the racing surface and damaging private property. Acquiring enough ambulances/helicopter for the days of the events. Your best bet is get in touch with the organizers of Long Beach or St. Petersburg. Doubt talking to Cleveland's organizers would help much since that race is on an airport. I know those are "big events" and you are looking for something small and local but when you put your butt on the line trying to organize something like this you need all the safety requirements met along with all the paperwork filed correctly. But honestly, if these street racers were worried about getting a time they would go to the nearest race course to get a time.
