A: Cotton, Nomex, and Carbon-X are the 3 most common materials used in racing. They can be from 1 to 3 layers thick..... more layers = more protection. Note: fire suits do NOT protect against radiated heat..... they protect agains fire. Having said that, the presence of a barrier between the body and the source of heat does offer some protection, but cannon be given an actual rating in the presence of fire. Just legal mumbo jumbo......
