Q: I think the timed lap at the end of qualifying should end before the qualifying period ends. The driver would have to finish his last lap before time runs out so he will not be in the way on his slow down lap like we saw last week in Sepang. The way teams count down the time to start thier last timed lap wouldn't be hard to figure out. I personally think this would be an excellant change, do you agree?
A: I'm sorry, but I must respectfully disagree with your hypothesis. Part of the reason why F1 qualifying is exciting-more exciting than the races-is because you have the drama of knowing that you will have drivers completing laps after the checkered flag so you have to wait to know who is where. I do agree with those who want to change the rule so that drivers on their "in" lap don't impede other drivers on "flyers" but the suggestion you're making robs the sport of one of its few truly dramatic elements and that is why I disagree with you.
